Grateful Dead Alum Bob Bralove Releases New Solo CD, Stories in Black and White

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 31, 2007 – Bob Bralove, former Grateful Dead MIDI master and creator of the band’s signature “Space” improvisations, steps into the spotlight with his new solo release, Stories in Black and White. This acoustic piano album marks a departure from Bralove’s electronic roots, featuring intimate, improvisational performances recorded on his father’s 1916 Steinway Grand piano.

Having built a reputation for his groundbreaking work with the Grateful Dead and his collaborations as part of the improvisational duo Dose Hermanos, Bralove’s Stories in Black and White showcases his first solo acoustic endeavor. “This album is my first solo exploration on acoustic piano,” Bralove shares. “Each piece was created, performed, and recorded in the moment, with no preconceptions of melody, harmony, or rhythm.”

The album was recorded during a series of intimate dinner parties Bralove hosted at his San Francisco home. Eschewing the precision of a formal studio environment, Bralove invited close friends to listen as he improvised in his living room, capturing both the music and the relaxed ambiance, complete with background sounds of conversation and even the occasional car passing by.

“I wanted to shift the consciousness of the recording sessions by creating a cozy, informal atmosphere,” Bralove recalls. “I would play and record for an hour, then we’d enjoy dinner together, and afterward, I’d return to the piano for more recording.”

Known for his innovative blend of music and technology, Bralove has long been a pioneer in integrating sound and visuals in live performances. Having honed his technical expertise working with Stevie Wonder and the Grateful Dead, Bralove developed a system that allows him to “play” both sound and images simultaneously, a process he refers to as “digital finger-painting.” This unique fusion of music and art has been a hallmark of his recent performances, including solo appearances, duo performances with Dose Hermanos, and collaborations with full orchestras.

“Today’s technology lets me map my visual artwork to the 88 keys of the piano,” Bralove explains. “I’m not just playing music—I’m playing visuals, adding a new dimension to my improvisational performances.”
